Today’s job market is rapidly evolving, with more and more emphasis on highly-skilled workers. The GACTC has historically supported both our students and the region’s workforce needs by training our students in the latest technologies and skills their field demands.
We don’t just provide the tools and training necessary to succeed — we provide the resources for our students to thrive. Kim Ciccarella, our Post-Secondary Recruitment, Retention, and Placement Specialist, is part of the team that leads these efforts.
Kim enjoys introducing new and prospective students to the Greater Allegheny Career & Technology Center (GACTC). She wears many hats: tour guide, academic advisor, career counselor, and community connector.
But, that’s just the beginning. Kim understands that the admission process may seem intimidating to new students — but it isn’t with her guidance. She knows the ins and outs of each part of enrollment. What prerequisites do they need? What are the deadlines? What documents need to be completed? The answers to these and many more questions are at the fingertips of the new students, due to her many years of experience in administration for adult education learning institutions.
Once the students are enrolled, I’m there to support them academically. I offer study tips, organize study sessions, and help them with any academic challenges they may face.
But her role extends beyond academics. She assists students with practical life skills, such as finding affordable housing, accessing food resources, and connecting with community services.
A significant part of my job is helping students find employment. I work closely with local employers to create internship opportunities and job placements. I also teach a career readiness course, where I cover topics like resume writing, interviewing skills, and workplace etiquette.
Like everyone at the GACTC, Kim believes in taking a holistic approach to student success by addressing not only their academic needs, but also their social and emotional well-being, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
