The Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) became aware of allegations related to Executive Director, Eric Palmer, on November 8, 2024. The GACTC takes the allegations seriously and took appropriate action in the interim. The GACTC will fully cooperate with any investigation. Mrs. Nicole Zernick will be serving as Interim Executive Director.

GACTC hosts open house for high school and adult career training programs

The Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center invites prospective high school students and adult learners to visit the GACTC during an open house on Tuesday, December 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. During the open house, individuals may tour the facility, learn about our high school and adult career training programs, speak with counselors and student services personnel, and more! The GACTC offers 25 programs for high school students, and many diploma and certificate programs for adult learners. GACTC Students Partner with Altoona Area High School to Create and Install Sensory Garden

Students of GACTC instructor Bill Doutt's masonry program built and installed planters for the new sensory garden at Altoona Area High School. The GACTC students worked from designs and schematic drawings produced by AASD's engineering and design students in a collaborative effort to create a new calming and welcoming space that stimulates “the sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound” at the high school. Practical Nursing Graduate Continues Success

Bridget Montgomery, LPN, a 2022 graduate of the GACTC Practical Nursing program, was awarded the 2023 Donald and Nancy Devorris Nursing Scholarship in May 2023. Bridget is completing a Bachelor’s degree in registered nursing with Mount Aloysius College, an endeavor she started while enrolled in the practical nursing program. Prior to her graduation in August 2022, Bridget was the recipient of a scholarship from the Pennsylvania Association of Practical Nursing Administrators (PAPNA) from the central PA region.  Annually, PAPNA awards three scholarships, one from each section of the state, including eastern, western, and central Pennsylvania. Practical Nursing graduates have success with licensure exam

In August 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our full- and part-time practical nursing programs, recognizing 63 graduates. Students in the full-time program were enrolled from August 2021 through August 2022; students in the part-time were enrolled from September 2020 through August 2022. After graduation from a practical nursing program, students have the option to apply for a Graduate Practical Nurse permit (GPN). With this permit, students can work as a GPN with supervision until they earn licensure as a practical nurse via the national licensure exam (NCLEX). GACTC offers credits towards postsecondary programs to career & technology students

Through an initiative of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program provides opportunities for secondary students that complete a career and technical program to earn credit towards related postsecondary credentials at participating postsecondary institutions. The GACTC recently received approval for two SOAR agreements, adding to existing articulation agreements the GACTC offers high school and adult students. Students that successfully complete the Health Occupations program at the GACTC or another career and technology center in Pennsylvania have the opportunity to earn credit towards postsecondary medical programs offered at the GACTC. Students to graduate from Practical Nursing program at the GACTC

Events to include a pinning ceremony and graduation The GACTC is preparing to graduate 64 students from our Practical Nursing program. Both full-time and part-time students from the Practical Nursing program will graduate. Two ceremonies are planned: first, the “pinning ceremony,” a symbolic welcoming of new nurses into the profession. The ceremony can be dated as far back as the 12th century, and became standard  in the United States by 1916. During the ceremony, students are pinned by nursing faculty. Adult students in healthcare fields graduate from the GACTC on August 4

Thirteen adult students graduated from the Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, and Expanded Function Dental Assistant diploma programs at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) on August 4. The students earned more than $114,000 in grant funding to complete their programs. The six Medical Assistant and one Medical Office Specialist students completed a minimum of 200 hours each of clinical experience at local medical facilities, including rotations in phlebotomy and EKG for the Medical Assistant students.
