The Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) became aware of allegations related to Executive Director, Eric Palmer, on November 8, 2024. The GACTC takes the allegations seriously and took appropriate action in the interim. The GACTC will fully cooperate with any investigation. Mrs. Nicole Zernick will be serving as Interim Executive Director.

The GACTC continues to respond to the needs of area students and employers by adding new adult education programs. Today the school announced a new dental assistant program for the 2024-2025 academic year as part of their adult education programming. In the Southern Alleghenies region, dental assistants remain as a high priority occupation. The dental assistant diploma program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment as dental assistants. Events held for practical nursing graduates

The GACTC graduated 26 students from the full-time Practical Nursing program on August 17, 2023. Graduation activities included a pinning ceremony on August 15th and commencement, held on August 17th at the Altoona Area High School. The “pinning ceremony,” a symbolic welcoming of new nurses into the profession, can be dated as far back as the 12th century, and became standard in the United States by 1916. GACTC celebrates graduates from Expanded Function Dental Assistant and Medical Assistant programs

On August 10, 2023, the GACTC celebrated the accomplishments of nine postsecondary students that successfully completed the Expanded Function Dental Assistant or Medical Assistant diploma programs. Collectively, our nine graduates completed more than 11,112 training hours in these programs; our Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) students participated in 480 hours of clinical experiences with local dental offices, and our Medical Assistant students end their coursework with a 240-hour clinical externship with a local medical facility. Adult & high school welding students earn American Welding Society certifications

Students in the Welding high school and adult programs at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) completed testing in May 2023 for several American Welding Society (AWS) certifications. GACTC students in the high school and adult welding programs had the opportunity to achieve up to three certifications from AWS including GMAW 2G, SMAW 3G, and FCAW 3G. Health Career Fair held for postsecondary health sciences students and alumni

On June 29th, a health career fair was held at the GACTC for current adult health sciences students and alumni, including students and alumni from our practical nursing, medical assistant, and phlebotomy programs. More than 30 employers attended to promote their organization’s open positions! GACTC students have been preparing references, resumes, cover letters, and growing their professionalism skills, which they were able to put to good use at the career fair. GACTC celebrates postsecondary graduates

In June 2023, the GACTC celebrated the accomplishments of 22 postsecondary students that successfully completed career-training diploma programs ranging from automotive/diesel technology to welding. The GACTC recognized students graduating from the following diploma programs: Automotive/Diesel Technology Cabinetmaking/Finished Carpentry Electrical Trades Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Welding with Print Reading Collectively, our 22 graduates: Completed more than 19,200 training hours in these programs! Earned over $190,221 in grant funding towards tuition! Several students participated in an internship experience during the last term of the program. The GACTC continues to respond to the needs of area students and employers by adding new adult education programs and virtual or hybrid options for existing programs. Today the school announced these additions for the 2023-2024 academic year: Electrical Trades Diploma Program: This adult-only program will train students to install, troubleshoot, and service electrical equipment and systems. Practical Nursing graduates have success with licensure exam

In August 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our full- and part-time practical nursing programs, recognizing 63 graduates. Students in the full-time program were enrolled from August 2021 through August 2022; students in the part-time were enrolled from September 2020 through August 2022. After graduation from a practical nursing program, students have the option to apply for a Graduate Practical Nurse permit (GPN). With this permit, students can work as a GPN with supervision until they earn licensure as a practical nurse via the national licensure exam (NCLEX).
