GACTC celebrates graduates from Expanded Function Dental Assistant and Medical Assistant programs

On August 10, 2023, the GACTC celebrated the accomplishments of nine postsecondary students that successfully completed the Expanded Function Dental Assistant or Medical Assistant diploma programs. Collectively, our nine graduates completed more than 11,112 training hours in these programs; our Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) students participated in 480 hours of clinical experiences with local dental offices, and our Medical Assistant students end their coursework with a 240-hour clinical externship with a local medical facility. Practical Nursing Graduate Continues Success

Bridget Montgomery, LPN, a 2022 graduate of the GACTC Practical Nursing program, was awarded the 2023 Donald and Nancy Devorris Nursing Scholarship in May 2023. Bridget is completing a Bachelor’s degree in registered nursing with Mount Aloysius College, an endeavor she started while enrolled in the practical nursing program. Prior to her graduation in August 2022, Bridget was the recipient of a scholarship from the Pennsylvania Association of Practical Nursing Administrators (PAPNA) from the central PA region.  Annually, PAPNA awards three scholarships, one from each section of the state, including eastern, western, and central Pennsylvania. Adult & high school welding students earn American Welding Society certifications

Students in the Welding high school and adult programs at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) completed testing in May 2023 for several American Welding Society (AWS) certifications. GACTC students in the high school and adult welding programs had the opportunity to achieve up to three certifications from AWS including GMAW 2G, SMAW 3G, and FCAW 3G. The GACTC is an Accredited Test Facility through AWS. These certifications are valued by regional employers. Health Career Fair held for postsecondary health sciences students and alumni

On June 29th, a health career fair was held at the GACTC for current adult health sciences students and alumni, including students and alumni from our practical nursing, medical assistant, and phlebotomy programs. More than 30 employers attended to promote their organization’s open positions! GACTC students have been preparing references, resumes, cover letters, and growing their professionalism skills, which they were able to put to good use at the career fair. GACTC celebrates postsecondary graduates

In June 2023, the GACTC celebrated the accomplishments of 22 postsecondary students that successfully completed career-training diploma programs ranging from automotive/diesel technology to welding. The GACTC recognized students graduating from the following diploma programs: Automotive/Diesel Technology Cabinetmaking/Finished Carpentry Electrical Trades Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Welding with Print Reading Collectively, our 22 graduates: Completed more than 19,200 training hours in these programs! Earned over $190,221 in grant funding towards tuition! Several students participated in an internship experience during the last term of the program. Practical Nursing graduates have success with licensure exam

In August 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our full- and part-time practical nursing programs, recognizing 63 graduates. Students in the full-time program were enrolled from August 2021 through August 2022; students in the part-time were enrolled from September 2020 through August 2022. After graduation from a practical nursing program, students have the option to apply for a Graduate Practical Nurse permit (GPN). With this permit, students can work as a GPN with supervision until they earn licensure as a practical nurse via the national licensure exam (NCLEX). Financial Aid 101 webinar to focus on options for financing career training

The GACTC adult education office and the Blair County CareerLink have collaborated to provide a free webinar focusing on financial aid for individuals considering postsecondary (college and career training) education. During the webinar, the GACTC financial aid coordinator will review the basics of the financial aid process, types of funding, and next steps. GACTC offers credits towards postsecondary programs to career & technology students

Through an initiative of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program provides opportunities for secondary students that complete a career and technical program to earn credit towards related postsecondary credentials at participating postsecondary institutions. The GACTC recently received approval for two SOAR agreements, adding to existing articulation agreements the GACTC offers high school and adult students. Students that successfully complete the Health Occupations program at the GACTC or another career and technology center in Pennsylvania have the opportunity to earn credit towards postsecondary medical programs offered at the GACTC.
